⑫Make Plastic Milk (플라스틱 우유 만들기)
Plastic is one of those materials that is used for everything from dishes to toys. Have you ever wondered about how it all gets made? We have an activity here that allows you to make your own plastic.
플라스틱은 접시에서 장난감까지 여러가지 물품에 사용되는 재료중의 하나예요. 혹시 이 플라스틱이 어떻게 만들어지는지 궁금해 한 적이 있나요? 바로 여기에서 우리만의 독특한 플라스틱을 만들 수 있는 실험을 해보도록 해요.
■ Material (실험 재료)
One cup of milk (우유 한 컵)
4 teaspoons of white vinegar (식초 4스푼)
A bowl (큰 그릇)
A strainer (거름망 또는 채반)
■ Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
Ask your parent to heat up the milk until it is hot, but not boiling (부모님께 우유를 뜨겁게 데워 달라고 부탁하세요. 끓일 필요는 없어요.)
Now ask the adult to carefully pour the milk into the bowl. (뜨거워진 우유를 준비된 큰 그릇에 넣어 주세요.)
Add the vinegar to the milk and stir it up with a spoon for about a minute (식초를 우유에 넣고 스픈으로 약 1분간 저어주세요.)
Now the fun part, pour the milk through the strainer into the sink – careful it may be hot! (가장 재미있는 부분인데, 식초를 넣은 우유를 주방 싱크대위에서 거름망에 걸러주세요. 조금 뜨거우니까 조심하세요.)
Left behind in the strainer is a mass of lumpy clumps. (거름망에 아마 울퉁불퉁한 덩어리가 남아 있을 거예요.)
When it is cool enough, you can rinse the clumps off in water while you press them together. (어느정도 식어지면 조금씩 눌러가면서 흐르는 물로 닦아주세요.)
Now just mold it into a shape and it will harden in a few days. – Cool! (원하는 모양으로 만들어두면 몇일 후에는 단단해 질 거예요. 멋지죠?)
■ How does it work? (왜 이렇게 되는 것인가요?)
Plastic? In milk? Well, sort of. You made a substance called CASEIN. It’s from the Latin word meaning “cheese.” Casein occurs when the protein in the milk meets the acid in the vinegar. The casein in milk does not mix with the acid and so it forms blobs. True plastics, called polymers, are a little different. If you want to make a true plastic and learn more about polymers, try to research “Homemade Slime” experiment. Have fun!
