⑨Straw Through Potato (빨대를 감자에 넣기)
Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourself, “Who comes up with this stuff?” No one ever uses a straw to eat a potato, but science nerds seem to like to find ways to poke straws through potatoes. There must be a deeper meaning… and there is!
우리는 가끔 하던일을 멈추고 우리자신에게 물어보곤 하죠. “도대체 누가 이런 생각을 했을까? 감자를 먹으려고 빨대를 사용하는 사람은 절대 없죠, 그러나 엉뚱한 과학자들은 빨대로 감자를 찔러보는 방법을 찾아보는데 흥미를 갖고 있는것 같아요. 그리고 거기에는 깊은 의미가 담겨있는 것 같아요, 그리고 실제로도 그렇구요!
The challenge is quite simple: Stab the straw through the potato without bending or breaking the straw. Most of your friends will think it can’t be done, but you, of course, know better.
실험은 간단한 거예요. 빨대를 구부리거나 부러뜨리지 않고 감자를 통과 시키는 것이지요. 여러분 친구들은 이것이 불가능하다고 생각할 거예요, 그러나 여러분은 그렇지 않죠?
■ Material (실험 재료)
Straws (빨대)
Raw potato (생감자)
■ Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
1. As you hold the potato, keep your fingers on the front and your thumb on the back and not on the top and bottom. You don’t want to stab yourself! Grab the straw with your writing hand and (shhh! this is the secret) cap the top end with your thumb. (감자를 잡을때, 손가락은 앞쪽으로 나오게 하고 엄지는 감자 뒤쪽을 잡아주세요. 감자 위쪽이나 아래쪽을 잡으면 안돼요. 손을 찌르면 안되거든요. 빨대를 글씨 쓰는 손으로 잡고 (쉿, 이것은 비밀이예요) 엄지 손가락으로 빨대의 윗쪽을 막아주세요.)
2. Hold on firmly to both the straw and the potato and with a quick, sharp stab, drive the straw into and partway out of the narrow end of the potato (not the fatter, middle part). (빨대와 감자를 단단히 잡고, 재빠르게 찔러주세요, 빨대를 감자의 얇은 부분쪽 – 두꺼운 가운데 쪽 말고-으로 넣어서 빼주세요.)
3. Your friends will be impressed and will want to try it. Tell them to hold the potato the way you did so they don’t stab a finger or thumb with the straw. They may not know the secret, but don’t give it away just yet. Let them try to figure it out. You may need more stiff straws. (여러분 친구들이 아마 인상깊게 보았을 거에요, 그래서 직접 해보고 싶은 마음도 들 거예요. 친구들에게 여러분들이 했던것처럼 엄지나 손가락을 다치지 않게 감자를 잡으라고 해 주세요. 아마 이것의 비밀을 아직 모를 거예요, 하지만 아직 말하면 안되요. 친구들이 스스로 알아낼 수 있도록 해주세요. 어쩌면 더 단단한 빨대가 필요할 수도 있어요.)
■How does it work? (왜 이렇게 되는 것인가요?)
The real secret is inside the straw—it’s air. Placing your thumb over the end of the straw traps the air inside. When you trap the air inside the straw, the air molecules compress and give the straw strength, which in turn keeps the sides from bending as you jam the straw through the potato. The trapped, compressed air makes the straw strong enough to cut through the skin, pass through the potato, and exit out the other side. Without your thumb covering the hole, the air is simply pushed out of the straw and the straw crumples and breaks as it hits the hard potato surface.
이 실험의 정말 비밀은 빨대 안에 있어요. 바로 공기예요. 여러분 엄지로 빨대 위쪽을 덮음으로써 빨대 안쪽에 공기를 잡아두는 거예요. 공기가 빨대안에 잡혀지게 되면 공기분자가 압축되어 빨대에 힘을 주게 되는 것이지요. 그래서 이것이 빨대를 감자안으로 찔러 넣을때 빨대가 구부러지는 것을 방지해 주는 것이예요. 안에 압축된 공기가 빨대를 강하게 만들어 빨대로 하여금 감자 껍질과 속을 뚫고 밖으로 나오게 하는 것이지요. 엄지로 빨대를 덮지 않으면, 공기가 빨대를 통과해 나와서 빨대가 구부러지고, 단단하 감자표면에 닿게 되면 부러지게 될 수도 있어요.
