⑧Make a Paperclip Float (물에 뜨는 종이클립)
Let’s put a paperclip in the water. What do you think would happen? You are not sure? Then let’s try this fun experiment together to see if we can make a paperclip float!
종이 클립을 물에 넣어 보세요. 무슨일이 일어날까요? 잘 모르겠다구요? 그러면 이번 실험을 통해 종이클립을 물에 뜰 수 있게 할 수 있는지 알아보아요!
■ Material (실험 재료)
Clean dry paper clips (깨끗하고 건조한 종이 클립)
Tissue paper (화장지)
A bowl of water (물이 담긴 그릇)
Pencil with eraser (지우개 달린 연필)
■ Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
1. Fill the bowl with water (그릇에 물을 채우세요)
2. Try to make the paper clip float…not much luck, huh? (종이 클립이 물위에 뜰 수 있도록 해보세요. 잘 안돼지요?)
3. Tear a piece of tissue paper about half the size of a dollar bill (화장지를 천원권 지폐의 반 정도 되는 사이즈로 자르세요.)
4. GENTLY drop the tissue flat onto the surface of the water (이 화장지를 물표면에 평평하게 조심해서 놓으세요.)
5. GENTLY place a dry paper clip flat onto the tissue (try not to touch the water or the tissue) (마른 종이클립을 화장지 위에 조심해서 놓으세요. 이때 물이나 종이를 만지지 않도록 조심하세요.)
6. Use the eraser end of the pencil to carefully poke the tissue (not the paper clip) until the tissue sinks. (연필끝쪽의 지우개로 종이클립이 아닌 화장지를 물에 가라앉을 수 있도록 살짝 눌러 주세요.)
7. With some luck, the tissue will sink and leave the paper clip floating! (운이 좋다면, 화장지는 가라앉고, 종이 클립은 물 위에 뜰 거예요!)
■ How does it work? (왜 이렇게 되는 것인가요?)
How is this possible? With a little thing we scientists call SURFACE TENSION. Basically it means that there is a sort of skin on the surface of water where the water molecules hold on tight together. If the conditions are right, they can hold tight enough to support your paper clip. The paperclip is not truly floating, it is being held up by the surface tension. Many insects, such as water striders, use this “skin” to walk across the surface of a stream.
이것이 어떻게 가능할까요? 이것이 바로 과학자들이 말하는 표면장력이예요. 간단하게 말하면 물분자가 탄탄하게 서로 붙들고 있는 물의 표면에 피부 같은 것이 있는거예요. 조건이 잘 갖추어 지면 물분자들이 종이클립을 지지해 줄수 있을 만큼 탄탄하게 붙들어 주는 것이지요. 이 종이클립은 뜨는 것이 아니라 표면 장력에 의해 붙들려 있는 것이예요. 소금쟁이와 같은 많은 곤충들이 바로 이 표면장력을 이용해 시내물위의 표면을 걸어 다니는 것이지요.
