⑦Making a Parachute(낙하산 만들기)
One of the objects that obeys the law of gravity is the parachute. In real life, parachutes are very valuable since they are used in emergency situations when people need to exit off a plane that is not functioning correctly. The parachute allows a person to land on the ground safely, but it requires lot of training. The time taken to reach the ground depends on the weight of the person, the wind speed, parachute size etc. You can create a parachute at home and experiment with it.
중력의 법칙에 잘 순응하는 물체중 하나는 바로 낙하산이예요. 낙하산은 제대로 작동하지 않는 비행기에서 사람들이 대피하여야 하는 응급 상황에서 유용하게 사용되요. 낙하산은 사람이 땅에 안전하게 착륙할 수 있도록 도와주는데 물론 많은 훈련이 필요해요. 땅에 도달할때가지의 시간은 사람의 체중, 바람의 속도 (풍속), 그리고 낙하산의 크기 등 많은 요인에 따라 달라져요. 여러분도 집에서 낙하산을 만들어 실험을 해 보도록 해요!
■Material (실험 재료)
plastic grocery bag (비닐봉지)/ dinner plate (접시)/ yarn or string (실 또는 줄)/ tape (테이프)/ scissors (가위)/ hole punch (구멍낼 수 있는 도구)/ marker (사인펜)/ A small object to act as the weight, a little action figure would be perfect (무게를 가할 수 있는 작은 물체, 작은 장난감 인형)
■Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
1. Using the plate, trace a large circle on one side of the plastic bag and cut it out ( 비닐봉지 위에 접시를 놓고, 접시를 따라 비닐봉지 위에 큰 원을 그리고, 그 원을 자르세요.)
2. Mark four spots around the circle with a marker, equal distance apart (원 주변에 4개의 점을 찍는데, 서로의 간격이 똑같을 수 있도록 해 주세요.)
3. Cover each spot with a piece of tape to make the area less resistant to tear ( 점을 찍은 곳 위에 테이프를 붙여서 잘 찢어지지 않게 해주세요.)
4. Punch a hole out of each spot (각 점을 찍은 곳에 구멍을 뚫어 주세요.)
5. Take 4 pieces of the same length of yarn and attach one to each of the holes (같은 길이의 줄 4 개를 가지고 각 구멍에 묶어 주세요.)
6. Tie the 4 pieces of yarn to the little action figure (4 줄을 작은 장난감 인형에 묶어주세요.)
7. Find a place to drop your parachute that will give you some height – top of the staircase, off the top of a jungle gym, etc. (낙하산을 떨어뜨릴 수 있는 높이가 되는 장소를 찾으세요. 예를 들면 층계위라든가, 놀이터 정글짐 같은곳 말이예요.)
■How does it work? (왜 이렇게 되는 것인가요?)
Hopefully your parachute will descend slowly to the ground, giving your weight a comfortable landing. When you release the parachute, the weight pulls down on the strings and opens up a large surface area of material that uses air resistance to slow it down. The larger the surface area and the more air resistance, the slower the parachute will drop. Cutting a small hole in the middle of the parachute will allow air to slowly pass through it rather than spilling out over one side, this should help the parachute fall straighter.
(여러분의 낙하산이 천천히 땅으로 하강하여 작은 인형이 안전하게 착륙했기를 바래요. 낙하산을 떨어뜨리면 작인인형 무게가 줄을 잡아당기게 되고, 비닐봉투를 활짝 열게 되는데, 이것이 공기저항을 일으켜 낙하산의 속력을 줄여주는 거예요. 낙하산 크기가 크면 클수록 공기저항도 커지고, 하강 속도는 더 느려지는 것이죠. 낙하산 가운데 조그만 구멍을 뚫어주게되면 공기가 한쪽으로만 흐르는 것이 아니라 이 구멍으로 통과하게 되면서 낙하산을 보다 똑바로 하강하게 하는데 도움을 주게 되요.)
