⑤Roll a Can with Static Electricity

They say opposites attract and that couldn't be truer with these fun static electricity experiments. Find out about positively and negatively charged particles using a few basic items. Can you control if they will be attracted or not attracted to each other?(다른 성질의 것들은 서로를 끌어당기는 힘이 있다고 하지요?

1 inflated balloon (불은 풍선 1개)/ Your hair (머리카락/머리)/ Empty Soda can (빈 탄산음료 캔)

■Procedure (실험 방법/절차)

Put the can on its side on a table or the floor -- anyplace that's flat and smooth. Hold it with your finger until it stays still.

Rub the balloon back and forth on your hair really fast.

Hold the balloon about an inch in front of the can. The can will start to roll, even though you're not touching it!

Move the balloon away from the can -- slowly -- and the can will follow the balloon.

■How does it work?

When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons (with a negative charge) build up on the surface of the balloon. This is called static electricity, which means “non-moving electricity” The electrons have the power to pull very light objects (with a positive charge) toward them – like the soda can.(여러분이 풍선을 머리에 문지를때, 보이지 않는 전자 (electron – 음성전자) 가 풍선의 표면에 생겨나기 시작해요.

■More Experiment using Static Electricity

Rub a balloon on your hair and you can bend water! Turn on the faucet in your bathroom or kitchen. Don't run the water too hard, but more than a little trickle. Now rub a balloon on your head and hold the balloon near the water. The stream of water will bend toward the balloon!(풍선을 머리에 문지르고 나서 그 풍선으로 물을 구부릴 수 있어요.
