A Magic Trick On Thermal Expansion (열팽창으로 인한 마술)

마술 하나를 배우고 싶으시다면 동전을 뛰게하는 마술 실험을 해 보세요! 친구들을 불러모아서 눈으로 보고 믿겨지지 않을 만한 특별한 것을 보여주세요, 그런데 이것이 과학적으로 설명될 수 있는 거 아시죠?
■ Things you need (필요한 것들)
•Cold water in a container (통에 담긴 찬물)
•Glass soft drink/soda bottle with a small mouth (소프트 드링크 유리병 – 입구가 좁은 것)
•Coin slightly bigger than bottle opening (병의 입구보다 조금 큰 동전)
■ Procedures (실험절차)
1. Allot 15 to 20 minutes to complete the Magic Jumping Coin experiment. (동전을 뛰게하는 이 실험을 위해 약 15-20분정도를 비워두세요.)
2. First, fill a container with ice cold water. (통을 얼음처럼 찬 물로 채워주세요.)
3. Put the bottle in the water upside down, so the bottleneck is in the ice cold water. (유리병을 거꾸로 물속에 담그세요 그래서 병의 입구쪽이 얼음물에 들어가도록 해주세요.)
4. Put the coin in with the bottle. (동전도 병과 같이 얼음물에 넣어주세요.)
5. Chilling both the glass bottle and the coin in the ice cold water is important, do not fill the bottle with water. (유리병과 동전 모두를 얼음물에 넣어 차갑게 하는 것이 중요해요. 유리병을 물로 채우지 마세요.)
6. Chilling the bottleneck and the coin will allow the top of the bottle to have that airtight seal when you place the coin on the mouth of the glass bottle. (이렇게 유리병 입구와 동전을 차갑게 하는 것이 이후에 동전을 유리병 입구에 올려놓았을때 유리병의 윗쪽이 공기가 통하지 않을 정도로 잘 막아주는데 도움이 되요.)
7. Next, wrap both your hands around the body of the bottle and observe the behaviour of the coin. (동전을 유리병 입구에 올려놓은 후에는 손으로 유리병을 잘 감싸주세요 그리고 동전이 어떻게 되는지 관찰하세요.)
8. Afterwards, release the bottle from your grip and observe what happens to the coin. (그리고 유리병을 잡았던 손을 놓고 동전이 어떻게 되는지 관찰하세요.)
■ Scientific Explanation (과학적 설명)
As observed, the coin began to jump up and down about 15 seconds after you wrapped your hands around the body of the bottle. Even after you removed your hands, notice that the coin still vibrated and jumped up and down on the opening of the bottle. (관찰한데로 여러분이 손을 병에 감싼뒤에 약 15초 정도 동전이 아래위로 뛰기 시작해요. 손을 병에서 뗀후에도 동전이 병의입구쪽에서 조금 진동을 하며 움직이는것을 볼거예요.)
The behaviour of the coin can be explained by the concept of thermal expansion. Thermal expansion happens when heat is applied to matter. When subjected to heat, the matter changes in volume as its particles begin to move around. This is when we notice that matter expands. (이러한 동전의 움직임은 열팽창 개념으로 설명될 수 있어요. 열이 물체에 전달되게 되면 열팽창이 일어나게 되요. 물체가 열을 받게되면 물체안의 입자들이 움직이게 되면서 부피에 변화가 일어나요.)
In the beginning of the Magic Jumping Coin experiment, both the air and the bottle are cold because of the cold water. As soon as you placed your hands around the body of the bottle, the air started to heat up causing thermal expansion to take place. As the air molecules expand, it pushes its way out of the bottle thus causing the cover, in this case the coin, to vibrate or jump up and down. This is what makes your coin magically jump! The coin will only
stop jumping when the air inside the bottle eventually cools down. (동전을 뛰게하는 실험을 시작할때 공기과 병이 찬 물때문에 온도가 아주 차가운 상태에요. 그런데 여러분이 손으로 유리병을 감싸게되면 열팽창이 일어날 수 있는 환경이 될 수 있도록 공기가 따뜻하게 되는 것이지요. 공기 입자가 팽창하게 되면서 공기가 밖으로 나가게되려 하는데, 이 과정에서 공기가 뚜겅, 여기서는 동전을 진동시키며 아래위로 움직이게 되는 것이예요. 이렇게해서 동전이 마술처럼 뛰게 되는 거에요. 동전은 유리병 안쪽의 공기가 차가워 지게 되면 움직임을 멈추게 되요.)
