Stalactites and stalagmites found in caves are an impressive feature of nature but they take a long time to form. Let’s speed up the process by making our own stalactites and stalagmites. With enough time they might even join in the middle and form a column.
동굴에서 발견되는 종유석과 석순은 놀라운 자연현상입니다. 그러나 그것들이 만들어지기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸립니다. 우리한번 우리자신의 종유석과 석순을 만들면서 그 형성하는데 걸리는 시간에 속도를 가해볼까요! 시간이 충분하면 종유석과 석순이 가운데에서 만나 기둥을 형성할 수도 있을 거예요.
■ Material (실험 재료)
• two (2) small glass jars (작은 유리컵 두개)
• one (1) small saucer (작은 컵받침 1개)
• wool or cotton yarn (thick is best) 면이나 양모실 (두꺼운 것이 좋아요.)
• baking soda or Epsom salt (베이킹 소다 또는 엡솜 소금)
• 2 weights such as metal nuts, heavy screws (무게를 잡아줄 수 있는 금속 너트나 무거운 나사)
• water (물)
• spoon (숟가락)
■ Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
1. Fill both jars with hot water. Dissolve as much soda as you can into each one. (유리컵 모두를 뜨거운 물로 채워주세요. 그리고 베이킹 소다가 녹을 수 있을 만큼 많이 양쪽 컵에 넣어주세요.)
2. Place the two jars in a warm place and put the saucer between them. (두 컵을 따뜻한 곳에 놓아주시고 그 사이에 컵 받침을 놓아주세요.)
3. Twist several strands of wool or cotton yarn together before dipping the ends into the jars and letting the middle of the thread hang down above the saucer. The ends can be weighed down with various small, heavy objects such as metal nuts or heavy screws to keep them in the jars. (양모나 면실 몇가닥을 서로 꼬아서 그 끝을 물컵속에 넣어주시고 실의 가운데 부분은 컵받침위에 걸리게 놓아주세요. 실의 양끝은 금속 너트나 무거운 나사등으로 묶어 물컵아래로 갈 수 있도록 해주세요.)
4. The two solutions should creep along the thread until they reach the middle and then drip down onto the saucer. (두 용액이 서서히 실을 따라 흡수될 것이고 가운데에서 만나서는 컵받침위로 용액이 떨어지기 시작할 거예요.)
5. Observe what happens to the experiment over then next few days. (며칠 동안 이 실험에 어떻게 진행되는지 관찰해 보세요.)
6. Don’t forget to wash your hands when you’ve finished. (끝나고 나면 손을 닦는것 잊지 마세요!)
■ Scientific Explanation (과학적 설명)
Over a few days the dripping water will leave behind the baking soda, forming a tiny stalactite (which forms from the roof) and stalagmite (which forms from the ground). With enough time these may eventually join to create a single column. Stalactites and stalagmites are columns of stone which form in underground caves. They are made from minerals dissolved in rainwater that slowly drips from the roofs and walls of caves.
(며칠동안 떨어지는 물이 베이킹 소다를 남겨두게 되고 위에서 부터 작은 종유석을 형성하게 되고 아래에서 부터는 석순을 형성하게 될거예요. 오랜시간이 지나면 이 둘이 석주라고 불리는 하나의 기둥을 형성하게 되죠. 종유석과 석순은 지하동굴에서 형성되는 기둥이예요. 이것들은 천정과 동굴의 벽에서 천천히 떨어지는 빗물속에 녹아있는 미네랄로 인해서 형성되는 것이예요.)
