㉕Toothpick Star (이쑤시개로 만드는 별!)
It’s always fun to use simple materials in simple ways and really surprise people with the results. OK, this one is a part of science and a part of magic but the results are all real. You start out with broken toothpicks and end up with a star-shaped design after just a few drops of water are added. The best part is that you can watch the change take place right in front of you.
아주 간단한 재료들을 이용하여 간단한 실험을 하지만 그 결과가 많은 사람들을 놀라게하면 정말 재미있죠? 자 그러면 이번실험은 일부는 과학적이고 일부는 마술적인 요소가 있지만 결과는 사실이예요. 처음엔 부러진 이쑤시개로 시작하지만 몇방울의 물을 떨어뜨림으로 인해 별과 같은 디자인을 만들어 내는 거예요. 가장 좋은 점은 이 변화가 일어나는 것을 여러분 앞에서 바로 관찰할 수 있다는 거예요.
■ Material (실험 재료)
New and dry wooden toothpicks (about 10) (마른 나무 이쑤시개 새것 5개) / A plate (물에 젖어도 되는 접시) / Water (물) / A straw, or an eye dropper or pipette (빨대, 눈약넣는 것 또는 스포이드)
■Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
Start with round toothpicks that are brand new and dry. Without breaking them completely, bend each one at the middle so it cracks but doesn’t break into two pieces. Press the ends together to widen the split. 둥근 모양의 마른 이쑤시개 새것으로 실험을 시작해요. 이쑤시개를 완전히 부러뜨리지는 마시고 가운데를 좀 구부려서 조금만 부러지게 해주세요. 2조각으로 완전히 부러뜨릴 필요는 없어요 부러진 가운데 부분이 더 벌어질 수 있도록 양끝을 조금 눌러주세요.
Place the split middles of the toothpicks together in the center of the plate to form a star shape. The edges of the toothpicks should touch each other. You’ve made a closed, five-pointed star.
이쑤시개의 구부러진 가운데를 모두 접시의 가운데로 모아 닿게 해서 별모양을 만들어 보세요. 각 이쑤시개의 양쪽 끝이 다른 이쑤기개의 끝과 닿아야 해요. 이렇게 여러분은 꼭 닫혀있는 5개 포인트의 별을 만든 거예요.
Load some water into the straw (or the eyedropper or the pipette). If you’d like, practice releasing small amounts of the water a drop at a time from the straw. (빨대 또는 스포이드안에 물을 조금 끌어당기세요. 원하면 어떻게 적은양의 물을 빨대로 끌어드리고 다시 방출하는지 연습해보세요.)
Use the straw to add drops of water at the middle of the star where the splits are closest to each other. The goal is to place the water so that all the exposed, broken ends get soaked. However, don’t add so much that the toothpicks start to float. (빨대를 이용하여 물 몇방울을 별모양의 가운데, 이쑤시개의 구부러진 부분이 같이 모아져 있는곳에 떨어뜨리세요. 목표는 부러져서 조금 드러난 나무 안쪽의 모든 부분을 물로 젖게 하는 거예요. 그러나 물을 너무 많이 넣으면 이쑤기개들이 둥둥뜨기 시작할거예요.)

■ Scientific Explanation (과학적 설명)
The toothpicks you used were probably made of dried birch wood. When you break the toothpicks, you stretch and compress the wood fibers inside them. When you put drops of water in the middle of the closed star formation, the dry wood fibers in each broken toothpick absorb some of it. This causes the fibers to swell and then to expand. The absorption of the water into the toothpick is due to capillary action. Capillaries are microscopic hollow tubes within the wood that draw water along the length of the toothpick. Capillaries normally carry water and food throughout a living plant’s stem and leaves.
As the wood absorbs the water, each individual toothpick tries to straighten itself as the soaked fibers expand. This straightening action causes the toothpick ends to push against each other. As the toothpicks straighten and push against each other, the inside of the star opens up into the final star shape.
여러분이 사용한 이쑤시개는 아마 마른 자작나무로 만들어진 것 일 거에요. 여러분이 이쑤시개를 구부릴때, 여러분이 이쑤시개 안에 있는 나무의 섬유질을 스트레치하고 압박하는 것이예요. 여러분이 닫혀져 있는 별모양의 가운데 물을 떨어뜨리게되면 구부러진 이쑤시개안에있는 마른 나무 섬유질이 물을 흡수하게 되요. 이것이 섬유질을 불어나게 하고 팽창하게 만드는 것이예요. 이쑤시개로 물이 흡수되는 것은 모세관 현상 때문이예요. 모세관이라고 하는 것은 나무안에 있는 아주 미세한 튜브같으 것인데, 이것이 이쑤시개 안으로 물을 끌어당기는 것이예요. 모세관들이 살아있는 식물의 줄기나 잎을 통해 영양분과 물을 운반하는 것이지요.
나무가 물을 흡수하면서 각각의 이쑤시개는 그 안의 섬유질이 팽창됨에 따라 반듯하게 펴지려고 하는 것이지요. 이렇게 펴지려고 하는 동작이 이쑤시개 끝을 서로 밀게 되는 것이예요. 이렇게 이쑤시개가 펴지고 서로를 밀게됨으로써 안쪽의 별이 더 열리게 되어 더 멋지 별이 되는 거예요.
