⑰Lava in a Cup! (컵에 용암 만들기!)
In this science experiment we will make some lava in a cup. Well, it’s not actually hot lava, but it looks like it ! We will use food coloring, vegetable oil, and salt to simulate the hot volcano lava.
이번 실험에서는 컵에 용암을 만들어 볼 거예요. 여러분이 생각하는 것 같은 뜨거운 용암이 아니라 용암과 모양이 같은 거예요. 이 실험에서는 식용 색소, 식용유 그리고 소금을 사용하여 뜨거운 화산의 용암을 재현해 볼거예요.
■ Material (실험 재료)
Salt (1 or more teaspoons) 소금 (1 티스픈 이상)
Tap water (수도물)
1/4 cup of olive or vegetable oil (1/4 컵의 올리브 오일이나 식용유)
Food coloring (red, green, blue, and any other color you like) (식용색소 – 빨간색, 초록색, 파란색 등 좋아하는 색상)
Large clear glass (큰 유리컵)
Eye dropper (optional if your food coloring is not in a dropper) (스포이드, 식용색소가 스포이드 형태의 용기에 들어있지 않을 경우)
■ Procedure (실험 방법/절차)
1. Fill the glass with tap water, about 2/3of the way. You'll need to add the oil later, so make sure there is enough room left in the cup. (수도물로 유리컵을 약 2/3 정도 채우세요. 나중에 기름을 넣을테니까, 기름이 들어갈 수 있는 공간을 남기고 수도물을 채우시면 되요.)
2. Pour the oil into the glass slowly. The oil will float on top of the water (don't try to mix it in). (기름을 유리컵에 천천히 넣어주세요. 기름이 물위에 뜰거예요. 이때 섞으려고 하면 안돼요.)
3. Add several drops of different food coloring to the water and oil. (식용색소 몇방울을 물과 기름에 떨어뜨리세요.)
4. Slowly sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt into the glass. Observe what happens to the oil and water mixture.(소금 한 티스픈을 유리컵에 천천히 뿌려주세요. 물과 기름에 어떤 변화가 생기는지 관찰해 보세요!)
■ Observation(관찰)
What happens to the liquid when water is added? What would happen if you add another teaspoon of salt? What if you add SEVERAL teaspoons of salt (give it a try and see)? How do you think another substance would affect the oil and water? What if you tried using sugar, sand, or even coffee grinds?
만약에 유리컵에 물을 더 넣으면 어떤일이 생기나요? 한 티스픈의 소금을 더 넣으면 어떤일이 생길까요? 만약 몇 티스픈의 소금을 넣으면 어떻게 될지 한번 해보실래요? 다른 물질이 물과 기름에 어떤 영향을 준다고 생각하세요? 만약 설탕이나 모래, 커피가루를 넣어보면 어떤일이 벌어질까요?
■ Scientific Explanation (과학적 설명)
Oil is lighter than the water, which is why it floats at the top. This is similar to what happens during oil spills on the ocean. The salt, on the other hand, is heavier than the oil. When it's added to the glass the salt begins to sink to the bottom of the glass, taking some of the oil with it. When the salt finally dissolves, the oil is released and again floats to the surface above the water.
기름은 물보다 가벼워요. 그래서 기름이 물 위게 뜨게 되는 거예요. 이것이 바로 바다에 기름이 유출되면 기름이 물위에 뜨는 것과 같은 거예요. 반면에 소금은 기름보다 무거워요. 소금이 컵에 들어가게 되면 컵 바닥으로 가라앉기 시작하는데 기름을 데리고 같이 가라앉게되요. 소금이 완전히 용해되게 되면 기름이 완전히 소금에서 떨어지게 되고 그래서 물의 표면위로 다시 떠오르게 되는 거예요.
